Belgian media: body of missing soldier Jürgen Conings found
The body of missing soldier Jürgen Conings (46) has been found lifeless in the Limburg Hoge Kempen National Park. This is reported by the editors of the Belgian regional channel TVL. The mayor of Maaseik, Johan Tollenaere, confirms to Het Laatste Nieuws that he himself discovered a body in the neighboring municipality of Dilsen and that there is a very good chance that it is Conings.
Tollenaere (Open VLD) made a mountain bike tour through the region this morning and noticed a pungent corpse smell in Dilsen. He then notified the emergency services and military personnel who are still on site to search for Conings. Tollenaere himself did not see the body, but everything points to Conings.
The mayor was mountain biking with five friends, like every Sunday. "Then they observed the corpse and passed on information about the location," alderman and party colleague Edgard Stijven confirmed to this site. According to him, Tollenaere informed the city council by app.
Jürgen Conings disappeared on May 17 with weapons he had taken from the Leopoldsburg barracks. The federal prosecutor immediately labeled Conings as a terror suspect because of his extreme right-wing sympathies and threats against virologist Marc Van Ranst, who has been staying in a safe house ever since. Conings was also on the OCAD list of potentially dangerous extremists.
His car was found a day later, but there was no trace of Conings. There have been dozens of searches for more than a month, especially in the Hoge Kempen National Park in Limburg.
