For easy examples we can look at desert road mirages. There, a thermal difference between layers of air has a direct lensing effect. Similarly, where RF energy ionizes and heats air, it can create 'fat bubbles' of warmer air within colder air. Those will show up quite visibly especially if they are high up where they can refract light terrain that's far away.
