I know the vatican is in control of an absurd amount of wealth. Originally, priests (including the first pope) could get married and have kids, but this introduced a problem for the Catholic church where the property that their churches resided on tended to be owned by the priest. Well, a simple papal edict changed all that, and now we have the Catholic Church owning over $10 trillion (estimate) in amassed wealth and land.
Given that change and others like it, it should surprise no one that they’ve paid over $2,000,000,000 just to settle child sex abuse claims in US courts.
What families are represented by the vatican state? Likely those descended from the early, powerful papal families like the borgias and the farnese... paging u/putinlovescats for some insights
Could you link to any estimates? I tried to find any of quality but ((google)) disappoints as always on this subject, so I pulled 10T out of my ass as the absolute lowest I could imagine
