The US constitution is quite literally a document created to minimize as much corruption from the ruling class as possible, and the Republic it governs is an extension of that constitution. Since its creation, that ruling class has been desperately trying to erode its functionality at every opportunity. Today, its application has become a hodge podge of bandage solutions implemented by simple minded greedy people.
Constitutions of every kind are created as direct limitations on the powers of governing bodies and were created as the absolute authority of the people. Imagine if King John was allowed to view the Magna Carta as a passing whimsey?
When the President openly states that "no amendment is absolute" and there is no riots in the streets over this comment, then you know it's all over for personal freedoms. I guess banning slavery and habeas corpus won't be absolute for much longer after they dispose of the 2nd.
