Alternative for parents who don't want to shop at target: thebookbundler.com
Old used books in great condition collated by subject, age, and condition. I've bought probably 1000 books for my kids and nephews to share and swap and grow into. I've been very happy with finding copies of books I remember reading as a small kid and being able to share them with my kids.

It doesn't seem to be that bad in Europe, or maybe just where I'm at, although it's been nearly two years since I strolled through a bookstore. I guess there's a business opportunity for someone to open a wholesome publishing company.
