That is an awesome idea. Think about it: society collapses every 10,000 years when it turns to night, collapsing the civilization for however long the night lasts. Then when the sun rises again, a new civilization rises, repeating the cycle, and resetting the technology.
Just like many are doing in real life with Earth Catastrophe Cycle. It's roughly 12,000. Due again within the next 30 years or so, according to those dismissed as crazy.
However, I've been noticing even mainstream science is now saying past polar flips have resulted in 'great extinctions'.
If we all lived in the light and the darkness came, it would be horrifying. If we only lived in darkness and the light came, I think that would be far worse.

Not sure about the movie/show, but this plot reminds me of Lorwyn / Shadowmoor.
