I suppose my actual question is what happens after we die but I'm convinced we go on after we pass on from this world. What determines where we go after we die in the 3d realm. Is the light a trick or are the spirits that show up a trick? What are the thoughts of those much more informed on this than me?

Upon your last gasp, some random conscious being in some random cosmos will become aware of itself for the first time. This will be you without the memory of your current life. There is no way to prevent this. The ride never ends, only memories do. Good deeds or religion play no role, it is not a supernatural process. Your next self could be another human being (very long odds), a chimp in a Pfizer lab, a stoat in siberia, a stoat-like animal on Rigel IV, a sentient space-probe built by stoat-like animals on Rigel IV, a simulated cat-brain built by the Department of Energy, or, most likely, some other random consciousness based on unknown physics in a universe inaccessible to us. NO REFUNDS. He who exists is a cursed nigger living in ignorance and pain. No end in sight, because there is none.
There are sects of Christianity that deemphasize or openly doubt an afterlife.
OP, my advice is to not play the game assuming it will go to extra innings.
What will it be like to go to sleep and never wake up?
What was it like to wake up, having never been asleep?
Read into Actual Death Studies and Near Death Experiences:
In short:
You do NOT necessarily get the denomination (christian, jewish, islamic, whatever) version of hell or heaven
Some people go into "interim" or bardo
Some people go to the tunnel, white light, life review, etc.
Some people, esp. those trained in advanced form of buddhism skip all that and go to the void (they bypass all "shiny objects" in afterlife as well)
Some can come back even after having been clinically dead for quite some time (even with zero cortical electrical activity and zero heart pumping)
Many then take their singular, particular, individual experience as THE ULTIMATE truth and try to generalize it as the only explanation that fits all (when even those who come back, differ so much in their experiences)
In short, we do not know, but you can categorize the different opinions/theories into various boxes:
7.1 We go to review out life, to learn lessons, because life is a (voluntary) school. Then we get to choose when/how to re-incarnate
7.2. We go to a process of cleansing (memories stripped), and processed by higher powers, and unless we really did everything "right" (whatever that is), we are put back here on earth involuntarily (to learn some more)
7.2. There's a whole system of trickery (love, light, life review, jesus, buddha, whatever tickles your fancy) involved in this soul-recycling system operated by aliens/gods/archons/whomever and earth is a prison planet and regardless of who you believe in, or how well you lived your life, you are just recycled and put back, because this is a zoo-prison-experiment and we are just cattle
Take your pick!
You are already a winner because you will be reincarnated as a cute pet gecko.
