Both of these articles demonstrate an extreme lack of understanding of the importance of crypto, bitcoin in particular. The second one is especially disturbing.

The purpose Bitcoin serves is to give economic freedom back into the hands of the people all over the world, and take it OUT of the hands of the international banksters and oligarchs that have used their complete monopoly over currency creation to fuck over the citizens for centuries.

Proof of Work is necessary because it helps provide a basis for value, as the conversion of energy into complex problem solving costs money and resources to do, hence giving a general basis of value. It also provides a level of security unmatched by anything that a Proof of Stake system can deliver.

The people who say that crypto is "bad for the environment" always seem to be the same people that buy into all of the other shit they claimed would happen with our climate but never panned out. Same people who think "the world will end in 12 years" if we don't join the Paris Climate nonsense.

In reality, it will likely lead to advances in energy generation and efficiency, because whomever can figure out a way to mine most efficiently or for the lowest energy costs will be more profitable and successful. It incentivizes finding ways to mine more efficiently. Better for the free market to drive technological advancements than any governmental or bureaucratic organization.
