I don't see common core as being evil (at least for math). It's an extremely good idea that has been abused.
Bright Math teachers: We don't need books to teach elementary math. We can teach math with every day objects. Lets create a set of standards that other teachers can emulate.
Book Publishers: We are about to lose a shit ton of money if this gains traction. Instead, lets update our books for common core and instead of losing a shit ton of money, we will gain it.

That's quite the whitewash of the common core math nonsense. There was no good idea there. Math was always taught with everyday objects.
