I have to believe they'd show a bit more empathy if they returned now. Before, we were tripping over each other to worship them. Now, we just want to evolve into a space-faring species, like them.

They'd obviously be intelligent enough to understand our sentiments, but the question is if they'd actually let us move on, or try to re-instate feudalism on a planet occupied by people that already know the bullshit they pulled thousands of years ago.
