People seem to be becoming dumber and mentally lazier, and academia is now very leftist and against independent thought. Much like the Church shutting out non-believers, universities are turning into thought-cults.

And as I noted elsewhere, I commented this week on Reddit that hate is bad, and in 100 minutes I got 44 downvotes (now 53) plus hate PMs saying that hate is good and telling me to FO. Literal insanity.
All in all, we ARE in barbaric times and thinking people are surrounded by malevolent peasant minds. But it has been engineered by the elite.
Rome was very weak, between plagues and cultural denegation. Byzantium stood for much longer. However, you're right, in that Rome almost had to fall for something better to arise in its place. All cultures and societies, rise, decay, and fall apart only to be replaced.
How we define "dark age" matters too. Scientific progress continues to advance, our lives our richer and easier and we die less from war and violence. On the other hand, the milieu that allowed for this flourishing is falling apart rapidly, and our lives have less meaning than ever.
Let us hope that the end of Western civilization, rapidly approaching, is replaced with something better after a period of hardship, not something worse.

This is stupid. We entered a dark age when the Roman Empire fell, and the barbarians aped Roman civilization.
