Oh yeah, I've had dirty stuff happen, but honestly it wasn't until college and grad school that I ever got seriously injured, and that one was extremely malicious and I probably should have sued the guy (absolutely ruined my back)...he grabbed my free arm on a layup and literally yanked my torso completely around. I wasn't expecting it, so I was loose which probably made it way worse. I stole the ball from him, and he was probably pissed.
And, not too much previous to that injury, I was elbowed in the head by a friend of mine, playing on the opposing team. He brought down a rebound and flared his elbows out and struck me right in the temple. That dude was more frenetic than anything though, so I chalk that up to zeal more than trying to foul hard or playing dirty.
Slipped three disks, still throw out my back constantly, and almost constant sciatica.
Couldn't walk for days, and I couldn't sleep with my legs straight out for years, which was really bothersome. Still can't do it a lot.
Also got a double hernia in more recent times, likely as a long term result of the injury...just gave me bad posture.
Now things are far better though, so much so that I might get back into sports this year. I do miss golf as well...lotta fun sports out there. :)
My mom wouldn't let me play soccer...er, footie, because she thought it was too dangerous. Same goes for American football. Basketball has far less injuries, so I'd tend to agree, my experience notwithstanding. Did sprain one ankle a lot, but I originally sprained it playing tennis (walking backwards just to retrieve a ball, no less).
I absolutely love soccer now though...I did play a little as a teen, even played "black top" soccer a lot, which is hella fun.
I tutored for a long time and one of my students was a CF for one of the Chelsea sponsored American club teams, and they got thrashed often, especially playing abroad.
As a funny aside, I won $680 one time at halftime of an indoor soccer league match by scoring against two goalies (who were two old guys from a radio station morning show). I was in college at the time, and a bunch of guys (including a few friends of mine) from my college were coincidentally at that game, and I could hear them ragging on me from the stands. I really tucked the ball away. :)
A soccer coach that tried after me missed THREE times (yeah, we had three chances...it was WAY too easy). Good times. :)
