how legitimate vs. astroturfed these protests are?
Both.
From the one side there are a lot of people who tired from all that Putin/NWO crap.
Actually everyone know that Putin and his accomplices are thiefs. However, part of population work for that system and will become absolutely useless if something changes. They know that Putin is thief and hope for some crumbs from his table. Part are fearmongered by MSM that things could become worse if Putin will be dismissed and they are know that Putin is thief but praise him because of fear of changes.
From the other side, this Navalny opposition have no any plan of what to do if they take over. Looks like they even don't think that they could succeed. And Navalny, like Putin is pushing NWO agenda. And no Navalny actions ever give any result. People participate in protests, get prosecutions and fines and nothing changing at all.
So, protests are partly ordinary people tired from
lawlessness and despair, partly astroturfed.
In any case that protests is not even close to the possible scale.
If there appear somebody without NWO agenda and clear plan for actions giving real results, there will be 10-20 millions on streets (or in other protest activity) to flush all that shit including Putin and his gang of oligarchs away. It is important, that since everybody know that Putin is thief, nobody (may be except shills from FSO (Secret Service)) will die for him and his oligarchs. Even FSB, police and military, who likely will run away to their property on the west, or will hide from new authorities to avoid prosecution for crimes commited under Putins oreders.
However, that is highly unlikely. There are no any person or organisation who could offer that way and head people.
Thank you for the perspective. What percentage of the population would you estimate actually supports Navalny? We always hear about how Putin enjoys tremendous popular support even if he is enriching himself on the side and the people understand this. I got suspicious of Navalny after the poisoning incident because it seemed just as much of a sham as the Skirpal incident in the UK. Same playbook.
Also is there a sense of who Putin's successor would be if he does step down? And what's the deal with these cases in recent years where the Russian govt resigns? I saw reports on this on Jan 16th in both 2020 and 2021. Does a legislative session convene yearly where there is typically high turnover or is this something less common?

There are no more than approx. 2% who are ready to follow him actively (protests, financing, etc.) and approx. 30-40% who agree with him on some points. And 100% know that his investigations on wealth of government officials and their friends are completely legit.

It is possible. However, it does not matter, was it a sham or not, the main thing is that Navalny uncover total FSB incompetence. This is real, there are no any competent employees in all that three-letter agencies. Soviet ones already retired, new ones come to racket and bribe. Navalny destroyed myth about "allmighty competent FSB/KGB". Total corruption in agencies was already perfectly known beforehand.
Navalny is definitely murky fellow, and he could sham, lie and propagandize, like any other politician.

No. And it really does not matter, since all his circle will stay in place. They could easily do the trick with Medvedev again, f.e. and nothing will change. The problem is a system built by liberal authorities, and the only purpose of that system is to suck resources from the country and people and rise the wealth of oligarchs and officials. Also it is important, that this system is totally approved by the West. And highly likely, when somebody will try to break that system, West will actively resist.

It was only in 2020. And it is just some internal rotation somehow connected with changes to constitution made in summer. Nothing changed. Really it does not matter how they rotate that dumb thieves in government, and it does not matter what they do with constitution, because every single state employee just spit on that constitution on every move or action.
It sounds as though Russia truly deals with a lot of the same issues as every other western government. Switch out the names and the story could be identical to elsewhere. Especially the bit about the west actively resisting any attempt to break the cycle of parasitism.
Does anyone here from russia have insight into how legitimate vs. astroturfed these protests are?
