To be fair to some of the mods (and I stress that - they know how I feel about others over there)... It was the admins that were forcing the mods to ban and [remove] said content from the website, IIRC. That said, yes, that was one of the creepiest topics I've seen. Definitely something nefarious going on at that place, IMO.
It was a combo of both, but, the Digg exodus was what really sealed the deal for Reddit supremacy. Fast forward a few, and Reddit died when the (up | down) vote you see on here was removed years ago. Once that happened, it set the foundation for bought and paid for content.
It was mainly the exodus from Digg.
They have always been Authoritarians. Look into the history of Progressives going back to the early 1900's. Hell, the Crest for the Fabian Socialists is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
