The Muslim belief is this: he was exposing the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders and was undermining their authority because he was sent from God and so he actually had authority over them. Power corrupts as they say. They were powerful and wanted to stay that way. The message is to worship God as he wants to be worshipped and not according to Pharisees whims. Also there was an interesting bit I read in the gospel of barnabas so obviously Christians don’t believe it ; he was preaching about Mohammed and Jews didn’t like that their “awaited saviour” will be an ishmaelite.
