Basically it appears that the Earth's inner structure isn't how we think it is. Its thin outer crust is MAGNETICALLY locked onto the mantle. This is evidenced, in part, because magnetic fluctuations on the sun change the speed of rotation of the Earth's crust. Tiny variations, but variations all the same.

You may have heard that the magnetic poles are moving? That's because the magnetic field is about to reverse, as happens regularly, per indisputable geological evidence. There is no question about it: the magnetic field is in the process of reversal, and this reversal is preceded by its... collapse.

That's right, the Earth's magnetic field is about to hit zero. But this magnetic field is what protects the Earth from cosmic rays for example. Without this protection, there is massive extinction of life on Earth. So that's one ouchie.

But what else happens when there is no magnetic field? The crust gets a lot more "loose" on its bed of magma and whatever else there might be between the mantle and the crust, the "low-velocity zone".

Shouldn't be a problem, right? Well... It just so happens that we have an unbalanced crust: the massive ice caps at the poles are disproportionately heavy. And if you take a spinning ball and coat its geographic poles with a bunch of hefty stuff, the ball wants to rotate and have those masses at the equator.

Yes, this too has incontrovertible geological evidence: the crust has rotated 90 degrees many, many times during Earth's history. Second ouchie. Great flood anybody?
