Kalmyks are probably remnants of running to the East Mongol horde when it was defeated by Russians. They stuck in a pocket between Black and Caspian seas with mountains from the south and Russians from the North. Mongol horde had several religions simultaneously and Buddhism was one of them.
They’ve done pretty well in the last, oh, century.
That's why they are whinning day and night about Stalin, USSR, Iron curtain, KGB, Putin, Russia, how they had to find their way out from our awful totalitarian empire and Russian orcs and all that stuff.
