They're still lying and have never been properly confronted about it. They were testing how easily the entire system could be misled, and they found out "mightily" was the answer.

Doctors were warned by the CDC to keep an eye out for Swine Flu infections, and they unwittingly hopped on a misdiagnosis bandwagon and saw Swine flu EVERYWHERE even when it wasn't flu at all.
