I often ask myself the exact same question with no good answers.

Fake space missions and such are useful on many levels (steal money, give the illusion of progress, etc..) but is this the real reason for the lies? Did they lie back at the beginning and then had to keep going? I do not know.

I suppose we can't go as far as they say they could due to the Van Allen Belt, or is it?
