Absolutely. The healthy response is to recognize your own limitations. There’s only so much you can personally do, and therefore there’s also only so much you can possibly take in at once. Step back from the endless cavalcade of “news” and elicit positive change internally. Get physically healthy. If you’re already physically healthy, become more self sufficient. If you already produce (or have stockpiled) a significant amount of your own food, go deeper and try to produce your own heat and power. Branch further and help your community be self sufficient, too. Make people around you, who you know in real life, trust you and understand that when it comes time to violate the laws (40 or so years ago, by my measure), you’ll be there to defend and protect them, so they’d better do the same for you.
Then step back into the endless torrent of far-flung reality with your head sitting square on your shoulders.

Oh, that refers to the large proportion of humanity we call “NPCs.” The vast majority of the human species (a word which is both singular and plural) does not exhibit the characteristics we associate with “humanity” in our books and anthropological understanding thereof. They’re not truly sapient, in other words. They react to external stimuli through stimulus response patterns and can simply be manipulated and directed (like livestock) by tweaking their emotional triggers. Their thoughts are not extrospective or introspective or retrospective. They live in the immediacy of the moment only. Combined with a lifetime of communist propaganda and they can never and will never change, because they are neurologically incapable of thinking for themselves.
The good news, as horrific as it is, is that this proportion of the population which behaves this way follows the Pareto Principle. That is, roughly 80% of them are like this. The other 20% can behave like humans. It’s those people who can wake up. It’s those people who will act.
All of human history is that tiny minority atop that tiny minority who led the 20% to act. The 80% then follows, unthinkingly, unquestioningly, once they are given the impression of a shift in strength from their leader caste.
