If you were a Jew anywhere in Europe, with the exceptions of Mother Russia or Switzerland— you survived the “holocaust.” Romanians, Poles, French, Czechs... the definition of the holocaust did seem to change... i was taught too that it was only German Jews, and only those captured, in hiding, or in camps.
