For the ones that have watched it, what is your take on Japan's side? Their motivation?

Official history says Japan was just expansionist, but the Japanese values would align perfectly with national socialism, and they'd be very concerned with Communism / Russia being so geographically close to them, so I'm inclined to, God forbid, question the official narrative.
