Are the (100s) of upvotes on here fake?
posted 1 year ago by Section23 1 year ago by Section23 +12 / -3

Whenever I ask a question I get no notice but it seems memes and news gets 100s of upvotes which I bet they all happen at once in an insanely inhuman speed. I am wondering if they are paid trolls or AI bots where most of this site is just that? I notice they are all news memes now just stupid sound bites.

This sounds like this is worth gathering some information.

Up you're up for it, I would recommend this script:

  1. Check new every minute for new posts. Add posts to a list for tracking.
  2. Iterate over the tracked posts. Check the upvotes, downvotes, and number of comments on each. Log this information. Run it through a sanity checker. After some amount of time (12 hours?) remove a post from the list of tracked posts.
  3. The sanity checker will take some tuning. This function will check upvote/comment ratio to see if it exceeds some upper bound. Memes regularly hit 50 upvotes with 0 comments for example. This may or may not be suspicious. It will also look for suspicious surges up upvotes. So if there's a sudden jump in the last minute or last 10 minutes that is unusual, then log that information.
  4. Dump the log periodically.

You can examine the data to see if there's anything unusual happening. If the flagging is consistently done by specific users, if those users are posting with unusual patterns. I remember some curious redditors finding posts that were posting about 1once a minute or had absolutely no breaks as one might expect from a human that would take a break to sleep.

We're at the point where you could literally feed this list to chat GPT and it would write it for you.
