I agree. Most Fire department calls are EMS these days as well. They still serve a purpose, but frankly, I think the issue is their retirement benefits are way, way to high (except for disability or some such). They retire after 25 years in their 50s, because nobody wants an old firefighter, and start collecting right away instead of at 65 or 72.
Most of them have 2nd jobs, because it cheaper to pay them to stay on call for 24 hours. For example, you have a on guy on duty for three days, on call when he's sleeping for 8 hours, or you have two guys on rotating 12 hours shifts.
Meh. Without doxing myself, I am deeply involved with local government and really, it's the same with cops. The real problem is the pensions. Guys get on the force at 22 after college, do 20 or so years, retire in their mid 50s with pension that go a LONG way when they move to a lower cost of living city/state.
Their wives almost always work too, so they are in the upper 10%, making at least 150-200k on the combined incomes. The only thing that hits them hard is the insurance when they retire, but then they go on their wife's plan.
I agree about getting selected in the hard part, or at least it was until a few years back. Cops and Fire are having a hard time getting people for the force, PDs especially.
