Perhaps a mistranslation from Gnostic. Gnostics writings are older than anything the Hebrews, Greeks or Aramaics came up with.
When you compare the Gnostic cosmogony to the Genesis cosmogony, you can see that the Genesis was constructed from pieces and parts of the Gnostic, which preceded it.
Maybe it was a poor translation of the Elohim and the Archons, a family of gods of the highest places in the Light and the lowest places of the Darkness Elohim, being the Family of God, was translated as a single; ‘God’. The Aeons became Angels, and the Archons became Demons. So, everything was converted into a ‘mystery’ and as such the Gnostic knowledge was destroyed.
Do you think the Elohim are the same as the Archons from the Gnostic Nag Hammadi teachings?
I'm pretty sure they are the “princely seed” or gods to the ancient Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians and Babylonians. And later to the Hebrews.
