Just saying, if none of the rounds hit anything vital, then yes you can live after getting shot 7 times with 556. You would be extremely lucky, but it's not impossible.
I'm willing to grant that yes, it's a million to one odds that he didn't bleed out and nothing vital was hit, from 7 close range shots, if by "back" some of those rounds hit his butt and went through the deltoid or some such, but you don't see any exit wounds when he's got his shirt off.
More likely is that if he was hit a couple times, maybe some of those hits the rounds had already passed through someone else so there was very little energy left in the bullet. But he even says he was shot in the back while on the ground, which means that those were direct hits.
I found no report of a 5.56 caliber being used.
Only an ar-15 style rifle.
You know they make those in 22 right?
It was a 5.56 homie, check out the court records: https://www.courts.state.co.us/userfiles/file/Court_Probation/04th_Judicial_District/El_Paso/22CR6008/22CR6008%20-%20People's%20Admitted%20Preliminary%20Hearing%20Exhibits%202-66%20and%2068_Redacted.pdf
He also had a handgun. Both were "ghost guns". You know they don't make 80% lowers plans for .22s, right?
It was also specifically called an assault rifle, which has a caliber designation.
Did you know they did tests to see if it was modded to be fully auto, which isn't possible for .22 AR, so why would they bother with that?
Don't make me dig through the case records, I've got better things to do with my time.

Kyle Odom would agree.
