A lot of sci fi and even paranoid government programs (eg. COG protocols), explore the ideas of humanity hiding out in underground bunkers to survive the self induced apocalypse de jour. How long could something such as this actually last before everyone perishes? (My thoughts in comments).

Four generations. After the third perishes there's no grounded understanding of the importance of perseverance.
Want to hear a wild theory?
When the interglacial periods end, and the glacial resumes. People will be forced down into caves, just like the neanderthals were living.
What if neanderthals/denovisans are actually what homo sapiens turned into after 80,000 years living in cave systems only coming up to hunt or get sun.
I feel like its possible.
Now that's some interesting shit. That's also terrifying, and would also mean there are likely Neanderthals or other things still down there.
