That diagram is showing a flat line because it is a compression of the shadows volume.
It's a bad diagram. It should show that the shadow is not cast in a blanket, but rather it would be curvy and that would match the display in the box.
So that isn't an issue except poor framing. It's because it was aimed directly down and they turned a 3d objects shadow into its projection in 2D.
