Most of the stuff they say is satellite communication, is actually land based, like GPS navigation. TV signals are land based, some transmitter on the top of a mountain somewhere sending the signal: based on how we are told radio signals work, we can bounce them off the firmament, extending the range, making it look like a signal is coming from the sky above.
The design of GPS is based partly on similar ground-based radio-navigation systems, such as LORAN and the Decca Navigator, developed in the early 1940s.
