Because of having no real competition we became fantastically rich. But cold war. So our solution to the cold war was money. Buy the favor of every nation. Rebuild europe, rebuild japan.
We kept doing that long after it stopped giving us massive returns in politics and favorability across the globe. Our allies came to expect such welfare and ridiculously good deals.
US policy makers didn't have the sense to see that it was slowly bleeding us and weakening us for 60+ years until Trump. Our allies took and took as much as they could.
Our policy was insane, their policy was to backstab us because we let them. They were looking out for their own interest and to get a good deal from a sucker. Trump also pointed out that was smart of them and we should have done so as well.
