We know from Daniel’s prophecy that this period of time from the beginning of the Tribulation to Christ’s return is to be about 7 years. A few verses earlier in Matthew, the reason was given, “And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.”
The meaning is that once the Tribulation begins, that particular generation “will not pass away until all these things take place.”
