It is about 4000 miles up, based on the angel of the shadow of sun rays.
Basic triangulation: take two sticks, put them in the ground at a 90 degree angel, in two separate geographical location, measure the height of the stick, and the length of the shadow, and you will know the angel of the sun rays. Difference of the angel can be used to triangulate the height of the sun. Put a third stick directly under the sun, where it cast no shadow, then measure the distance to the other two sticks, and you got yourself a triangel. where you know all the angels of that triangle.
I can make it real simple for you. Imagine a triangle, the shadow at point A comes in at a 90 degree angle, while the shadow at point B comes in at a 45 degree angle. Then we know that the angle at point C in the triangle is 45 degree. If the distance between point A and B is 4000 miles, then the distance between point A and C will also be 4000 miles.
