The actual reasons for the ramp up are a really interesting topic, but I haven't put in the time and research to really 'know'. Is the cancerous growth model we've been following about to finally collapse? Is it the imminent polar flip and associated planetary disaster? Do the "13 families" really have a plan to survive and continue their controlling ownership of this planet?

Whatever is actually going on, it's going to feature prominently in the history books, assuming books will still be a thing afterwards.
