Rumor is that there's secret biolab stuff going on in there and that foreign nationals are among the defenders. If there's truth to this then I'd expect them to scuttle the facility before it can be captured

Pretty much all the reporting describes a labyrinthine maze like structure, complete with tunnels, etc. From what Putin said directly, it wasn’t worth taking it quickly and risk high casualties for a handful of special forces.

In what world do people seek out and choose inconvenient and unsterile catacombs for bio-research, when no shortage of above ground facilities would exist?
In case you didn't realize, bioweapons research is done in ABOVE ground facilities that are known to the Russian government and US government.
These sites have contracts with the WHO and US subcontractors. There are public documents. From what we can see, this research is done in under the guise of "studying" dangerous pathogens for other reasons, and are almost always labeled research or 'defensive" in nature, despite potentially producing what are essentially bioweapons. These facilities are hidden in plain sight, right under the publics noses.
That's even what the Russian's are saying. The Russian's don't have any logical reason to lie about the nature of the steel mill they were blockading. If there were claims about a biolab there, it would make sense for it to be coming from RUSSIA, not some random dipshit with no evidence or source.

There is no benefit to setting up a bioweapons lab deep in a catacombs right under another strategic asset that might be a target in a military conflict (steel production, etc.).
