Flat Earth was designed to make Conspiracy Theorists look like idiots, but too many of them started brushing it off too quickly. They learned their lesson. Birds Aren't Real was designed for the same purpose, but was deliberately made to be ridiculous.

It is useful for that purpose now, but not when the "flat earth" psyop began (2000's).
The purpose of the rationally offensive and heavily advertised (i.e. heavily funded) psyop was to ensure that no one would ever earnestly evaluate or discuss this important subject. It was so effective that now it can be used to well poison merely by association.
