The definition of species is weird and incomplete, simply because genes evolve from each individual, so the border between 2 different species can be very vague (add the fact that life mutates, and thus provokes changes that shouldn't be happening). It is however mostly defined as a large organism group in which individuals can reproduce and make fertile children to continue the line.
Races are just groups of individuals put together because they share a particular physical trait. Could be skin color, which is the most visible, but can be anything else too. You could make a race about all people with green eyes and call it "The Greens". You could make a race about people who have exactly 157846 hair on the head.
I said physical trait, not physical appearance. The example of skin color is simply because to us, it's the most visible, therefor the most "logical" to have as a distinction between us, but you could have a race based on anything within the specie, as long as you have some genes in commons.
