One of the larger problems with "prepping" is that a lot of preppers make it their personality. Doom and gloom is reflected everywhere in their lives after a while. Their ego gets intertwined with their decision to prepare for the worst. Soon they only see the bad, they only talk about the bad. They find themselves creating the reality they feared in the first place. They become accelerationists of a sort. Intolerable to those that loved them. I have seen it happen first hand, more than once.
Be prepared, sure. Just don't be obsessed. So far SHTF predictions are batting .000
