The Azov battalion in Ukraine was bright to life (arguably through foreign influence) by converging these circumstances:

  • 1 part Orthodox - a basis in common belief and foundation for alignment of purpose
  • 2 parts Sport - capture both individual pursuit of excellence and self improvement -and- team commradrie and shared social gatherings. In Ukraine this was MMA+soccer
  • 1 part extremism - bootstrapped the group with recruits that have ties to historic Nazi fighters from post WWII: Ukranian Insurgent Army

They came to life conveniently in time to resist the actions in Crimea. Interestingly it was the Azov's sense of nationalism, not their opposition to Russia's ideologies, they caused them to oppose foreign interference. Reference: http://www.futbolgrad.com/ukrainian-ultras-unorthodox-revolution/
