These symbols are commonly thought to be the appearance of Sol as it appears every 12,046 years. Some think it's because of a Solar micro-nova, others think that the Earth's magnetic field drops to such a low point during the pole shift that it's an 'aurora borealis' type effect of normal solar wind. I think based on the evidence that it's probably a combination of both.
