Good explanation. Also highlights how despicable and evil those currently manipulating the public's trust in the "greater good" of authority are when you put it into historical context.
In the Western world in the post-WWII era, authority fomented and was ranked by a generation that just served in war. The larger authoritative body was similarly run and ranked by their fellow soldiers, so everyone was working towards a common vision of peace, prosperity, and justice.
However, the 20th century rolled forward and this generation grew old and died. Their spoiled children (Boomers) only knew of a peaceful, just world where authority and institutions were created to guide and protect the populace through life. And it worked great.
But generations have passed and the incredibly trusting institutions the Silent Generation and Greatest Generations built--that can only run that way if they are TRUSTED by the people--are abusing this power of trust between authority and citizen.
But since that's been massaged into every American's brain since birth post-WWII that the Government and Authorities are here for our best interests, it's pretty easy to see why one half of the population is following blindly while the other half is angry as hell at this betrayal of the public trust. And now both sides are also angry at each other, the "believers" against those questioning authority and the skeptics who aren't so much angry at the people themselves as they are the institutions, but since the believers are acting as speaking proxies for the authority they are regarded with contempt as such.
It's a real mess.
