I think BTC has since been compromised and they have control over it.

Correct.

But what couldnt be controlled was the concept of decentralized currency. New cryptos started popping up, some even being direct clones of bitcoin (BSV, BCH).

BSV was another power grab. BCH is Bitcoin as it was meant to be.

TPTB bought the developers and the major forums that promoted Bitcoin.
