Learning institutions use flames and torches to represent enlightenment and the passing on of knowledge. The original logo for the Smithsonian Institution had torches on it. In 1966, the sun from founder James Smithson's coat of arms was made into a new logo. In heraldry the design is called "The Sun in His Splendor." It still represents truth and knowledge, but at an even greater magnitude.
