the difference is that about 99% of the muslims that are living or lived in afghanistan during the time of american occupation until taliban takeover supported the sharia law and never wanted anything else 1. that is probably why the taliban could take over without much resistance, because most of the country thinks good of them.
so if you want to call the backward mentality of taliban "based" and think they "fought for their beliefs", you are free to do so. but keep in mind that they were always playing a winning hand

It seems clear that they have state level backing. Powerful people created a firestorm to hand them $80b+ worth of military hardware and untold amounts is cash.
The Taliban is financed and supported by world powers. And given that the world powers are evil, the taliban is evil.
