I always wondered why it didn't mutate much more often. Like we wouldn't be on Delta, we'd have seen many more variants.

There were lots of variants, most of them not particularly transmissible or deadly. They only gave names like 'Delta' to "variants of concern' - the ones that were more of a threat.
