I got the letter in the mail about this from the IRS. I have three under 18 kids. This $3k is the Child Tax Credit that I'd normally get as a deduction when I would file my 2021 tax return in January of 2022, but I'm getting it early.
At least that's my understanding. I threw the letter away in disgust after a brief scan.
So, it's not a new UBI, it's just paying people out for what they already would get under the existing tax code, but in a UBI-ish way.
Frankly, for all those who think the Dems want to collapse the economy, I think they are trying to apply Keynesian economics and flood the country with money to prop things up before the 2022 midterms, and this is one way to do it.
From what I read on the website, it's no longer just a tax reimbursement, but it actually pays the amount to people who don't file/pay taxes. So definitely a form of UBI for them.
I'm confused, how is the child tax credit a monthly payment? I thought it was just a tax break?
This is definitely an expanded UBI for families, opens the door to extend it later.
