The push for statehood seems like a wedge issue to me. It's another point for the political class to beat to death while accomplishing nothing and ignoring other issues
It would make it part of America, which it currently is not. Forcing the Federal government to become a part of the states. Which is almost utterly impossible to accomplish, seeing as how it is separate for many, many intentional reasons.
This new state would then be capable of righting it's own laws. Ones governed entirely by politicians.
