Are we sure it's not just a translation error? That the soy isn't just turning the male fish gay?
catfish might be similar to clownfish where they can actually change their sex depending on circumstances (I say change clownfish are born with both sets of reproductive organs if the alpha female dies immature males can activate the female organs and become female - fully grown clownfish cannot change sex)
there are apparently quite a few fish that can change sex
and I do mean actually change sex as in there are biological systems in place to facilitate this
