"Dark Matter" as it's originally defined exists. It is, simply, all the stuff we can't directly see (e.g. we see the giant fireballs in a star system, but can't see the planets/comets/etc).
It's a calculation placeholder of how gravity works - mainly because we don't really understand how gravity works, just that it does work somehow and it seems to follow the math we have when we experiment with it on earth.
What "dark matter" has become in popular media and even some of the more esoteric research is what doesn't exist. Dark matter isn't some magical material with special properties, outside of not being on fire and/or emitting some other kind of light.
