Up to a point, we can measure the portions of the atmosphere that can be observed by the presence of moisture/air particles/gravitational pull, but as devices get more sophisticated we can see even fainter measures of the presence of hydrogen (in this instance). We essentially compare that to the composition of dead space, where you're not going to find any such particles presence.
