Oh and there's also a group of psychopaths running around that are unphased by seeing the monster that try to make the normal people open their eyes and look at the monster.
Basically a virus or invisible monster of some sort develops quickly in the world and anyone that looks at it gets infected and becomes suicidal and immediately kills themselves by jumping into traffic, out windows, etc. The main character bounces around different houses by putting a blindfold on and carrying a bird in a box that flips out when the monster is around. The character's love interest dies and she decides to find a colony of like-minded people, which happens to be a school for the blind and then lives there with her kids, happily ever after.
You could probably add up some symbolism with the media, blind following of experimental vaccinations, and any number of other self destructive behavior brought on by society today. Seems to be relevant to OPs post to me.
If you haven't seen it already, the movie Birdbox on Netflix has some foreshadowing of what's going on right now. Came out with odd timing too.
